Food for Thought

I have worked with many children over the past few years.  However, there was one child that really touched me.  I was working as a Behavioral Research Specialist, and two of my kids (siblings) did not have much.  They were boys and they had to wear their sister old shoes.  Now, this is the twisted part, one day I asked them what would they like for me to get them.  I told them it could be anything they wanted and I would get it for them.  Their response was so simple it almost made me cry.  All they said was, they just wanted me to keep coming and picking them up during the week because they enjoy talking to me.  I know this isn't an educational post, but from that moment I had realized that I had made a difference in these two boys lives' and that is what I strive to do everyday at my school.

One book that I think of that I absolutely like is the Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.  I want my students to be able to trust me like Chester trusted Mrs. Raccoon.  If I can build a trusting relationship with my students then the possibilities of us achieving excellence is inevitable.

  1. Kalya, What a beautiful story! You did truly touch their lives and most likely will be forevered remembered as someone very special to them. I believe that you must be a great teacher. You know the value of trust in a realtionship with little people is a great and mighty thing. Yes, you and your children will go far! Thanks for the story.

  2. Very touching post Kayla. I think that developing a trusting relation with the children in which we work with on a daily basis is so important. The children need to be able to trust us just as we need to be able to turst them. Some children have no one at home that will take time out to even ask how their day went, so, for a child to have that special someone at school they can reach out to is a good thing. I feel sooo sorry for some of these young people. It is hard to believe that children so young experience such BIG problems in their lives these days. They do not know how to handle their feelings at this age so they need to be able to talk to a trusting adult so that they can be guided in the right direction.
